Get inspired: Christmas art ideas we’re loving

We have a selection of Christmas art ideas to get you feeling festive. It is important to keep the little ones preoccupied during this exciting time. We decided to put together a list of creative Christmas art ideas suitable for the whole family.

1. Personalised cotton ball cards / decorations

First on our list of Christmas art ideas for kids are some adorable cotton ball snowmen for you to personalise! All you need to make these are:

• Paper
• Scissors
• Colouring pens/pencils
• Cotton balls
• Glue.

You may also need a printer to print out the photos you wish to use. If you do not have a printer, many supermarkets offer printing services.

If you would like to make a card, fold the paper and cut it into the desired shape. If you are wanting to make a decoration for your tree, make a hole at the top of your snowman. Then thread some ribbon through to turn it into a cute Christmas tree ornament.

Next, draw a scarf and buttons. Colour them in and cut them out. Cut out the photo of the face you wish to use on your snowman. Then glue it onto the snowman template.

Run a glue stick over the snowman cut out, and then stick on the cotton balls. Once you’re happy, use the glue again to stick on your accessories, and your snowman is complete! If you chose to make a card, don’t forget to write a festive message inside!

2. Scrabble word frame

Another of our Christmas art ideas is a scrabble word frame. In the arts and craft sections of many stores, you will find bags of scrabble tiles. These can be used to make beautiful, personalised gifts. Use the scrabble tiles to arrange family member’s names or a festive message!

You will need:

• Scrabble tiles
• Glue
• A frame / box frame
• Card
• Sequins (optional)
• Stickers (optional)
• Embellishments (optional).

Before sticking down any tiles, be sure to arrange them exactly how you want them. This will help you avoid any mess later on if you change your mind about placements. This will also help you organise how they will look in the frame and will ensure they fit correctly.

If needed, make sure you trim the card down to fit inside the frame. When you’re happy with the placements, use the glue to stick the scrabble tiles onto the sheet of card. You can also adorn your work with embellishments if you like, but these are not essential.

3. Festive pebbles

A trip to the beach can provide you with some of the materials needed for our next Christmas art idea. Collect some pebbles (the size is up to you) and take them home for a clean. You can then paint them with any design you wish. Perhaps paint a snowflake or Santa’s face! Acrylic paints will work well, you can also use varnish once they are dry to give them a shiny finish. These can also be combined with our previous Christmas art idea. Use glue to stick the pebbles onto a sturdy card and place them in a box frame. These could also work as an excellent personalised gift.

4. Clay ornaments

Our next Christmas art idea is clay ornaments that you can make out of cookie cutters! Simply buy a pack of air-drying clay and some Christmas cookie cutters. Roll out the clay and use the cutters to make those festive shapes. You could also use a pencil to write your loved one’s names in the clay. You could also immortalise them buy stamping down their fingerprint! If you’re planning on hanging them, ensure you cut out a small hole for the ribbon before the clay dries.

Once they are dry, you can paint them and add any other extras. Depending on their weight, they could be hung on the tree with some ribbon. But hanging them on the mantelpiece may be more suitable with less of a risk of falling off and breaking!

5. Nativity egg box

We are big on recycling, so we encourage you to reuse an egg box for our next Christmas art idea. One of the most traditional images for Christmas is the nativity. You can paint the box and add stickers and straw to create the stable where baby Jesus was born. You can then use felt, pipe cleaners and pompoms to create your characters!

6. Wood slice decorations

Another of our Christmas art ideas is these wood slice decorations. You can paint these slices of wood with whichever festive images you like. They can then be hung onto your Christmas tree with string! These decorations can also give your tree a rustic look.

7. Gingerbread / cardboard house

One of the most fun Christmas art ideas we have is that of the gingerbread house. If you like baking, this is the craft idea for you! You can also buy pre-made gingerbread houses ready for you to assemble and decorate. If you would prefer to make one that the little ones won’t try to eat, there is the cardboard option. This alternative is a lot less tasty. You can decorate these with stickers and glitter if you wish. You could even use strips of small LED lights along the gutters. Or you can hide them inside to give a cosy glow. You could also make smaller cardboard houses and string them into your tree as cute decorations.
