Christmas writing ideas to get your child into literature

1. What happened next?

The perfect Christmas writing activity for you and your little one to do together.

Take your child’s favourite festive story – it can be from a book or film – and think about what happened next.

What happened to the Grinch and Cindy Lou? Did Kevin have to face the Wet Bandits again? Did Scrooge really change his “bah humbug” ways?

And you can do this Christmas writing activity every time you read a book or watch a film. If you read your little one a festive story at bedtime, talk about what they think happened next.

Encourage your child’s imagination and help them see how magical Christmas stories can be.

2. Rewrite your favourite Christmas stories

This Christmas writing idea is sure to ignite your little one’s creative side!

If you want your child to fall in love with literature, encourage them to rewrite their favourite Christmas stories.

Choose their favourite scenes and encourage them to get creative. What will they do with their favourite Christmas characters? What adventures will they take?

By getting your little one to rewrite their favourite Christmas story, you know they’re already invested in the festive tale. It’s a sure-fire way to keep your child entertained while encouraging their love of literature!

The possibilities are endless with this one. You and your little one should come up with scenarios that start with “what would you do if…”. Then you should imagine what would happen if that scenario came to life and write about it!

What would you do if you saw Santa come down the chimney? What would you do if your snowman came to life?

And don’t just stop with one scenario. Encourage your child to keep going with their Christmassy story. You never know, maybe it’ll turn into a full-blown festive tale! 

4. Write about the perfect Christmas Day

This Christmas writing activity is sure to get your little one into literature – and ready for December 25^th!

Encourage your child to think of their perfect Christmas Day. Would they start the morning with breakfast or go straight to presents? What would they have on their Christmas dinner? What games would the family play?

Once they’ve thought of their perfect Christmas Day, get them to write about it. Or write about it together! When you’re finished, ask your child to read it to you.

Or even better – why not ask everyone in the family to write about their perfect Christmas Day? And share each other’s stories when you’re done. That’s sure to get you all in the Christmas spirit!

5. Create your own Christmas character

6. Write your own Christmas play

With this Christmas writing idea, your child is sure to fall in love with festive stories!

Encourage your little one to write their own Christmas play. They can create their own characters or borrow their festive favourites.

And when the play is finished, why not perform it for all your family and friends? It’s the perfect activity to put you in the Christmas spirit. And when your child sees everyone enjoying their Christmas play, they’ll be inspired to create more!

7. Play a Christmas writing game

If none of these Christmas writing activities are enough to get your child into literature, why not try a game?

Place different “festive” words into a hat and get your child to pick three at random. Look at the words they picked – that’s the basis of their Christmas story!

Or try the “finish the story” game. Start by writing two lines of a story on a piece of paper. Fold the paper so only the second line is visible and pass it on to the next player. It’s the second player’s job to guess the first line of the story and add what happens next. Keep passing the paper between each player until you run out of room.

When you’re done, read the story back and see what festive tale you have created!
