Christmas decorating ideas for kids

1. Making Christmas cards

The simple and most common Christmas decorating ideas for kids is making Christmas cards. The activity requires minimum supplies, and the kids can make as many as they want. Get different colour pieces of card and let the kids have free reign of how they want to decorate them. Use pens, glitter, paint, pom poms and more to make some bright and eye-catching cards. Don’t forget to give those cards out to family and friends so they can display them for everyone to see.

2. Colouring in

A simple but effective way to keep the kids entertained on a cold winter’s day. There are plenty of colouring pages you can print off or you could even buy some Christmas colouring books. Grab the pens and pencils and let the kids have fun colouring in pictures of Santa and elves. You could even join in with them. Hang up the pictures on the fridge for everyone to see.

3. Painting pictures

Another Christmas decorating idea for kids to take part in at home is painting pictures. We recommend wearing old clothes and covering the floor and tables as this could get messy. However, the kids will love it and that’s all that matters. You could paint pictures of Santa and his reindeers or a family of elves. Whatever the children decide to paint let them display their work around the house.

4. Decorating baubles

Why not add some creativity and individuality to your tree and let your kids decorate their own baubles? This is a great way for kids to get creative and have some input on how the tree is decorated. Buy some plain plastic baubles and let the children decorate them in which way they want. The more glitter the better we say. After all, you want those baubles to sparkle on your Christmas tree. You can use the baubles year upon year. It’s a nice reminder to the children of an activity you did together.

5. Toilet roll reindeers

Instead of throwing away those toilet roll tubes after you’ve finished with them, decorate them. Turn them into toilet roll reindeers. Paint them and stick eyes, a nose, mouth and antlers on them to make them look like reindeer. It’s a simple but fun way to reuse household waste. You could use them as decorations to display around the house.

Why not get some white card and draw your own masks to cut out and wear? Decorate the masks to create different festive characters such as Rudolf or Santa. 7. Paper plate Santas

Have you got some spare paper plates in your kitchen cupboard? Let the kids put them to use and make some paper plate Santas. You’ll need paint, glue, googley eyes and pens to transform your paper plate into Santa. You could add some string to your plates and hang them from the doors or on the walls.

8. Lolly stick snowflakes

 Transform those old lolly sticks into some pretty snowflakes. All it takes is some lolly sticks, white paint and glue. Paint the sticks white and glue them together to create a snowflake. You could add some colourful glitter to make your snowflakes look pretty. Add some string and hang them from your tree. Show off your kid’s creative skills for everyone to see.

9. Handprint wreaths

Another fun Christmas decorating idea for kids is creating handprint wreaths. Using green card or paper, draw around your kid’s hands until you have 5 pairs of hands. Cut the hands out and arrange them in a circle to create a wreath. Glue them all together and decorate the wreath with a bow, pom poms and sequins. Hang the wreath upon a door or wall.

10. Painted pinecones

 Why not take a family walk through the woods. Ask the kids to collect pinecones to take back home to decorate. You could paint your pinecones bright colours or add glitter and sequins to make them sparkle. You could hang your decorated pinecones on your tree or display them in a bowl.

11. Paper plate baubles

This is a great messy play idea that lets children design their own baubles using paper plates. Turn those boring white paper plates into bright colourful baubles. Let the children decorate them with tissue paper, felt, glitter and paint. The more colourful the better. They are sure to stand out.

12. Reindeer gift bags

If you’re like us, you’ll appreciate nice gift bags when gifting Christmas presents. Instead of buying some, let your kids create some reindeer ones. Turn a brown bag into a reindeer. Use a red pom pom for the nose and stick on some googley eyes. Stick candy canes to the inside of the bag to represents antlers. Your family and friends will love receiving presents in these DIY bags.
