Let’s look at Christmas food around the world…

Germany

First on our list of Christmas food around the world is Germany. In Germany, families indulge in a Christmas feast centred around Weihnachtsgans – a Christmas goose!

Stuffed with apples, chestnuts, onions and prunes, the Christmas goose is an essential part of a German Christmas dinner. And it’s often given an extra kick with different herbs and spices. Sounds tasty, right?

Japan

Next on our list of Christmas food around the world is Japan. In Japan, families celebrate Christmas Eve with fried chicken from KFC. In fact, this dish is so popular, families need to reserve their meal up to two weeks in advance!

For an extra sweet treat, KFCs in Japan also offer Christmas cake in their buckets of fried chicken.

Italy

Across Italy, there are lots of different Christmas food traditions. Some families celebrate with The Feast of the Seven Fishes, which is seven different fishes prepared in different ways. Would you give this seafood feast a try?

In Northern Italy, Christmas is celebrated with a sweet Christmas food tradition. Families enjoy panettone – a cake with candied fruit, chocolate, raisins and nuts. We think it sounds delicious!

England

A list of Christmas food around the world wouldn’t be complete without this next one!

There are plenty of Christmas food traditions in England. Most families enjoy a roast dinner on Christmas Day, with turkey, stuffing, vegetables and gravy.

Following a delicious roast dinner, Christmas pudding is served – a sweet treat made with raisins and dried fruit. And when the Christmas pudding is served, it’s set alight with brandy. Would you give this Christmas food tradition a try?

Australia

Australia celebrate their Christmas in the summer months, so most of their Christmas food traditions take place outside.

In Australia, Christmas dinner is usually a casual affair. Family and friends gather around the barbeque to enjoy different meats, seafood and fresh vegetables. Although some families do opt for the British tradition of a roast dinner and Christmas pudding instead!

France

Next on our list of Christmas food around the world is France. One of the most important festive food traditions in France is the La Bûche de Noël. This sweet treat is similar to a Yule Log.

Traditionally, wood logs were carried into the home, sprinkled with wine, and set alight on Christmas Eve. When this tradition started to die out in the 1940s, the traditional Christmas Yule Log took its place! Now, families in France enjoy this chocolatey dessert on Christmas Eve.

Greece

In Greece, it’s tradition to enjoy sweet, orange-zest cookies soaked in honey and topped with walnut. Also known as melomakarona. These delicious, sweet treats are enjoyed throughout the twelve days of Christmas. We can’t wait to try these this Christmas season!

Mexico

In Mexico, families enjoy a Bacalao – also known as salted cod. This Christmas food tradition comes from the days before refrigeration, when it was necessary to salt meats and fish. Although it’s no longer necessary, the tradition has continued!

Now, it’s custom to rehydrate and cook the fish for a tender, delicious meal. Would you try salted cod at Christmas time?

Sweden

Sweden has many different Christmas food traditions. Are you ready to read about them?

On Christmas Day, families enjoy a three-course meal of fish, cold cuts and sausages, and meatballs and potato casserole. For dessert, it’s tradition to tuck into a delicious saffron bun. It used to be custom for the oldest daughter to make serve the dessert. But now, anyone can try their hand at baking this delicious, sweet treat!

Finland

We’re nearly at the end of our list of Christmas food around the world. But we still have a few more facts to share with you!

In Finland, Christmas is celebrated with a buffet. Families tuck into Christmas ham, fish, casseroles, mushroom salad, pickled herring and Karelian stew.

Philippines  

Christmas in the Philippines is a huge deal. And it’s known for having the longest Christmas season! In the Philippines, Christmas starts in September and lasts through to the 9^{th of} January. But what Christmas food traditions do they have to celebrate the festive period?

Christmas dinner in the Philippines is known as Noche Buena. Traditionally enjoyed on Christmas Eve, this feast includes cured pork leg and spit-roasted pig.
