Christmas cooking for kids: Create your own candy

1. Santa Academy Candy

At Santa Academy, we have plenty of activity packs available. One of our favourites is the ‘Create your own candy’ activity. This is a great way to get your little ones feeling festive and creative. They can design their own candy, whatever that may be, and perhaps you can help try to make it! Mr Bon Bon has a list of all the ingredients for your kids to use.

2. Melted snowman

A fun Christmas cooking for kids idea is the melted snowman chocolate bar. Melt some white chocolate and pour it onto a baking tray. Then, use different sweets to decorate the puddle to look like a melted snowman. You could use twiglets or pretzel sticks for arms. And candy corn for a nose!

3. Oreo popsicles

Oreos can be used to make a variety of Christmas treats. Put an Oreo or three on a popsicle stick or kebab skewer. Then dip them into melted chocolate. If you want to create a snowman, use three Oreos in white chocolate. Then you can decorate the chocolate covered Oreos to look like Santa, reindeer or snowmen.

You could skip putting Oreos on a stick, and simply dip them in chocolate. Then use an icing pen to draw on snowflakes. You could use blue food colouring in the melted chocolate to make your Oreo even more cool. Making food in crazy colours is great when doing Christmas cooking for kids.

4. S’mores bark

S’mores are a great treat to have beside a cosy fire. You can also make s’mores into a bark. Mix together some melted chocolate, biscuit and marshmallow. Or you can neatly layer them, if you prefer. We suggest using marshmallow Fluff as it is probably easier. They also come in different flavours!

5. Hot chocolate treat

Some people prefer a hot chocolate as a treat, and there are plenty of ways to make them festive. Melt some chocolate into your drink, or a spoonful of Nutella. You could add mini marshmallows or a candy cane. This may not exactly be Christmas cooking for kids, but they will certainly enjoy it!

Hot chocolate cones are popular, especially at Christmas. Your kids will love making various cones for later use. You can help them decorate their cones too. Use stick-on googly eyes, pom poms and pipe cleaners to create different festive characters.

6. Candy cane sleigh

If you’re up for a challenge, why not make a candy cane sleigh? You could use various bars of chocolate in a pile to form a sleigh. Tie them with a ribbon and then put two candy canes underneath for the runners. Tighten the bow and now you have your own candy sleigh!

7. Gingerbread cookies

 Gingerbread men and houses are often popular around Christmas time. Especially when doing Christmas cooking for kids. They can be great fun to make with your kids. But you could also use different cookie cutter shapes to make more unique gingerbread biscuits. You could make gingerbread stockings, trees, snowflakes and reindeer! And best of all, you can then decorate them with sweets and icing.

8. Candy cheesecake

If cheesecake is a favourite in your house, there are plenty of ways to make them festive. Decorate your cheesecake topping with various green and red sweets and sprinkles.

9. Red velvet crinkle cookies

Red is often regarded as the colour of Christmas, so it would be fitting to make red velvet crinkle cookies. Kids love biscuits, so they are perfect Christmas cooking for kids ideas. Their sugary coating looks like a light dusting of snow, so they are absolutely Santa approved.

10. Mouse King fudge

Fans of The Nutcracker will appreciate the Mouse King fudge. Create fudge triangles and decorate them with chocolate buttons for ears. Use M&Ms or Smarties for eyes and a nose. Finally, enthrone your Mouse King with a candy or decorative crown.

11. Rice crispy presents

Just like cornflakes (mentioned in section 14) rice krispies and coco pops are also great for making treats. They are super easy when doing Christmas cooking for kids. Mix rice krispies into marshmallow or chocolate. Next, shape them into a square, use some kind of a cookie cutter to make this easier. Then, wrap a candy lace around them for a bow. It’s a quick and easy way to create a tasty Christmas present.

You could also cut rice crispy cakes into the shape of trees and decorate them. Then use a candy cane for the trunk!

12. Reindeer tea cakes/truffles

Turning tea cakes and truffles into reindeers is fun! Why not help your kids to decorate one? Decorate the tea cake/truffle to make a face. And use pretzels to make awesome antlers. Don’t forget a bright red nose!

13. Chocolate trees

Kids enjoy building things, so they will love our next idea. Use Reese’s Cups and Hershey’s Kisses to make a stack of chocolate in the shape of a Christmas tree. Then decorate it however you like! Use icing to create tinsel and sprinkles for baubles. You could even keep an eye out for star shaped sprinkles to stick one on top!

14. Crispy cornflake creations

One of the easiest Christmas cooking for kids ideas is using cornflakes. All you have to do is melt some chocolate and mix it into a bowl of cornflakes. Then shape individual cakes. If you have Christmas cookie cutters, try using them to create a more festive shape. There are plenty of Christmas themed decorations and sprinkles to use.

You can also use cornflakes and white chocolate with green food colouring. Shape the mix into a wreath and help your little one to decorate their creation. You can use red smarties for the berries.
